Abstract

Comparing characters species statistically, it is found that it is problematic to take “Sanzijing” (三字經), “Baijiaxing” (百家姓), “Qianziwen” (千字文) and “Sishu” (四書) as teaching materials nowadays. However there is a tendency for species of high frequency characters in such poems as “Qianjiashi” (千家詩), “Essence of ancient poetry reading” (古詩詞誦讀精華), “Eighty ancient poems” (古詩80首), “Seventy ancient poems” (古詩70首), this tendency provides us some evidence and reference in selecting character species in reading materials for primary school pupils.

Keywords: “Sanzijing”; “Baijiaxing”; “Qianziwen”; ancient poems; character species; character quantities; character teaching
