On the Rational and Customary Principles of Language Norm (Article written in Chinese)

ZOU Shaohua

Abstract

Language norm has two principles on the whole, one is rational and the other is customary. Rational principle insists that we should determine what is right or wrong according to the so-called academic theories. This principle deals with briefness, analogy, conservativeness and predictiveness. The paper points out that though these theoretical bases can somewhat explain the language norm, they are at a lower level and have some deviations and limitations. While customary principle is in favor of judging things on the basis of operationalization, this principle belongs to a higher level which is not only scientific but also easy to follow in that it has the arbitrariness — a combination of sound and meaning, objectiveness — showing the talent of group people, and maneuverability to concrete norms.

Keywords: language norm; rational principle; customary principle
