On the Pronunciation Variation of η Initial in Hankou Dialect and Its Reason (Article written in Chinese)

WANG Li

Abstract

By using the sociolinguistic method, the paper observes and studies the variation about the pronunciation of 64 η initial characters of the old “Hankou” (º~¤f) dialect in the present “Hankou” dialect. The direct result of the losing of the η initial and the appearing of the γ pronouncing characters in the present “Hankou” dialect clearly shows the developing tendency of the change of the “Hankou” dialect to the Standard Chinese. Is this the natural change of dialect or the planning development? According to the developing orbit of the losing of the η initial and the appearing of the γ pronouncing characters, it seems the active guide of the Chinese language planning in the dialect development.

Keywords: the “Hankou” dialect; η initial; γ pronouncing character; the variation of speech; survey of language; language policy
