On the Statistic and Grading Study of Explanatory Vocabulary in Modern Chinese Dictionary (Article written in Chinese)

AN Hualin & QU Weiguang

Abstract

The study of explanatory vocabulary abroad begins with the research on basic vocabulary, which ultimately contributes to the approach of using the minimum vocabulary in dictionary compiling. However, the quantitative research on explanatory vocabulary in Chinese dictionaries has made virtually no progress. Based on the theoretic approach to modern Chinese meta-language system, the paper takes the lead in conducting a quantitative study of the explanatory vocabulary in Modern Chinese Dictionary. With the statistic findings, the paper grades the vocabulary in terms of frequency and lists out “The Table For the High Frequency Words in Explanatory Corpus in Modern Chinese Dictionary”. The research paper aims at establishing the foundation for optimizing explanatory vocabulary in compiling Chinese dictionaries, and in the meantime bridging the gap in the selection of the language materials for the commonly used vocabulary counting of modem Chinese.

Keywords: Chinese Dictionary; explanatory vocabulary; statistic; grading; high frequency wordlist
