The Effect of a Word’s Function on Word Meaning and Compilation of Language Dictionary (Article written in Chinese)

SU Baorong

Abstract

In the study of the extension rules of Chinese word meaning and the systematism of word meaning, people notice that the formation of quite a number of word sense is not the result of the word meaning’s self extension, but the result of parts of speech (or grammatical function). We call it “the functional meaning of a word”. The functional meaning of a word can be divided into two functional meanings: regular and irregular. The disclosing and extracting of the functional meaning of a word depends on the “grammatical structure” in which it exists. In order to have a complete and thorough explanation of the function and meaning of a word, contemporary language dictionaries should make a conscious research on and explanation of the functional meaning.
