A Comparative Study of Abbreviations Used in Net News Headlines in English and Chinese (Article written in Chinese)

Abstract

Based on the analysis of the data obtained from net news headlines, this paper respectively classifies the English abbreviations and Chinese abbreviations in terms of their word-formation. The English abbreviations, classified into five types and the Chinese abbreviations into six types. So far as their similarities in word-formation are concerned, the English abbreviations are grouped into two major types and the Chinese abbreviations into three major types. Guided by the economy principle of language, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of different types of abbreviations used in English and Chinese net news headlines and explores the causes of the similarities and differences between Chinese and English in their use of abbreviations in net news headlines.
