Factor Analysis on Phonological Short-term Memory of Foreign Students (Article written in Chinese)

TIAN Liang & GAO Liqun

Abstract

As a part of the memory system, short-term memory occupies one of the most important stages in the processing of language understanding. This paper tries to analyze the effects of language proficiency, type, and the gender factor, etc., which might affect the phonological short-term memory of students learning Chinese as a second language. The result is that the phonological similarity effect exists in both Chinese learners and the native speakers, but it is obvious that the capability of phonological short-term memory of the former ones is smaller than that of the latter ones, for the Chinese tones might be encoded as a separated part in the Chinese learners’ memory system.

Keywords: phonological short-term memory; Chinese learning; second language acquisition
