WU Yunfang, DUAN Huiming, & YU Shiwen

Abstract

The issue of verb selectional restrictions on arguments has always been a hot topic in the field of Natural Language Processing. With the help of noun taxonomy of HowNet, based on the corpus of People’s Daily, this paper investigates 46 Chinese verbs selectional restrictions on objects. The verbs are frequently used in the corpus and can have nouns as objects. Verb selectional restrictions can be applied in Chinese language processing such as word sense disambiguation but have some limitations.

Keywords: selectional restrictions/selectional preferences; noun taxonomy; semantic relation; word sense disambiguation
