ZHANG Weiguo

Abstract

After the comparison of the coverage rates of variant lists of Characters and words, it is found that the coverage of Characters and words fail to reflect well the level of such reading and recognition, the readable degree therefore is raised. The paper found, by checking and calculating of real reading materials, the satisfying reading and understanding is set on readable degree of about 0.95, and, to reach such readable degree, the ratio of Characters to words the reader learned should reach the rational value of 1:7. That is to say, for foreign Chinese-learners, to have a satisfying reading level, they should learn about 20000–30000 Chinese words when they learn about 3000 Characters.
