Pragmatic Analysis of Appraisive Tautology Structure (Article written in Chinese)

YIN Hehui

Abstract

This article has analyzed pragmatic value of a kind of tautology which its subject and object are the same nouns. There is another feature of the structure, i.e. the copula “shi” is modified by adverbs. The author argues that the main pragmatic value of the structure is to express subjective opinion, and to judge whether the object agrees with its idealized cognitive model in human being’s subjective world. Appraisive tautology violates the Cooperative Principles, and usually expresses conversational implication. Maxims of conversation and Space mapping explanation can be used to production and understanding of the structure.

Keywords: appraisive tautology; subjective judgment; maxims of conversation; space mapping theory
