Occurrence of Character in Textbooks for Learning Chinese as a Second Language: An Experimental Study (Article written in Chinese)

HAO Meiling & LIU Youyi

Abstract

This paper examines the influence of occurrence of different types of characters on foreign students’ character learning achievement (CLA). The results show that the occurrence of a character (OC) in textbooks really influenced the CLA, but it is different for different types of character. For the characters with high productivity in forming words, the CLA is slightly affected by the 0C, while the CLA is heavily influenced by the 0C for the low productive characters. In order to reach equal achievement, characters representing bound morphemes need more times of occurrence in textbooks than those representing free morphemes. A proposal on the occurrence in textbooks for different type of characters is put forward.

Keywords: productivity in forming words; types of morpheme; occurrence of character; character learning achievement
