The Compositionality Principle in Adjectival Modification Research (Article written in Chinese)

LI Xuening & LU Ruzhan

Abstract

As a basic method for meaning computation in Formal Semantics, the Compositionality Principle finds it difficult for the application to the research in adjectival modification, which displays the meaning shift of adjectives in different contexts and various logical relationships in combinations. Two improvements are introduced to include the treatment of adjectives as functors or indexed predicates, along with the simplification of the semantic relationships. It is worthwhile to mention Blutner’s work in connectionism as a consideration of the combination of Logic and knowledge for a better understanding. Although many issues left open, the approach in formal semantics is preferred because it advances the natural language understanding in ALP.

Keywords: adjectival modification; Compositionality Principle; representation; computation
