Abstract
This paper analyzes the linguistic fact of imperfect correspondence between traditional and simplified Chinese characters and discusses its raison d’etre. We found it is imperative to construct a lexicon of paired simplified and traditional Chinese characters to ensure accuracy of automatic conversion in computer. The design principles to constructing the lexicon of characters are also proposed.
