ZHANG Xin

Abstract

Economic considerations in language policy constitute a relatively new development trend. The situation that economics is not seen as a language-related discipline has been changing in recent years, as a result of the evolution taking place on two planes. On the one hand, a certain degree of interest in language matters has always maintained in the economics profession. On the other, an increasing number of specialists in language studies come to realize that the language policies they advocate have economic implications. This paper offers a review of such propositions. The first part sets the conceptual groundwork known as “language economics” or “economics of language”. The second part presents the main stands of research in language economics. The third and the fourth parts turn to the economic perspectives.

Keywords: economics of language; language policy; evaluation; cost-benefit analysis
