The Morphological Motivation of the Neologism BOKE (blog) in Chinese (Article written in Chinese)

ZHOU Youbin

Abstract

The buzzword boke (博客) is translated from the English word “bolg”. This thesis analyzes the semantic development and the morphemizing of boke, and explores the motivation as to why “blog” can be translated into boke. The author proposes that the choice of the transliterated forms of some foreign words depends mainly on the similarity between the literal meaning of the translated word and the lexical meaning of the cognate word. In addition, the article provides a tentative explanation for the emergence of such a lexical blend like boke riji (blog diary).

Keywords: boke; semantics; morphemizing; motivation
