Abstract
This is an empirical study on asymmetry of zheme and name in discourse based upon authentic written corpus data of more than 164.5 million Chinese characters. The main asymmetrical dimensions of zheme and name in discourse are identified and classified into the following binary oppositions: 1. the opposition of spatial versus temporal distance; 2. the opposition of proximal versus distal mental distance; 3. the opposition of factual versus fictive reference; 4. the opposition versus new and given information (demonstrative and non-demonstrative).
