Research on Bracket-annotation of Two-character Components and Four-character Units in the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (5th edition) (Article written in Chinese)

Abstract

Bracket annotation, which is used in vocabulary entries to annotate the entry’s components or component units, is widely used in the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary. The article focuses on the bracket annotation of four-character unit in two-character vocabulary entry and two-character component in four-character vocabulary entries, and attempts to figure out the following problems as the choice of words with bracket annotations: the purpose and function of bracket annotations; the selection between bracket annotation and separated entries; and the coordination of the content of bracket annotation and the explanation of separated entries. Through this exploration, the system of interpretation within brackets will be fully represented. It serves as the reference for future improvements of the dictionary.
