Abstract
This article discusses the formation and development of Chinese orthographic awareness of the learners of Chinese Indonesians by lexical decision tasks. The result says that the foreign students of Chinese Indonesian in low grade have formed Chinese orthographic awareness which is mostly cognition of characters with left-right structures; intermediate and high grade students have already had the awareness of both left-right and up-down characters. The awareness of the Chinese orthography develops across the years; the awareness of left-right characters is higher to up-down ones, and the priority is recognized in the three grades. The results also show that the learners of Chinese Indonesians form the awareness of Chinese orthography earlier than the overseas EuropeanAmerican students with the mother tongue of alphabetic writing systems. Indonesian students advantage may be related to their informal experience of learning Chinese; the priority of left-right characters may owe to more left-right characters than up-down ones in the Chinese materials.
