Abstract
This paper analyzes the characteristics of collective compound words, such as “zhizhang (paper)”, “fangjian (room)”, from semantic, grammatical and pragmatic perspectives, and traces the formation of these words from a diachronic point of view. The essential cause that we find is that the emergence of collective compound words is motivated by the formation of a large number of measure words during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, and the need of expression is also of great importance. The article also summarizes the conditions of the formation of collective compound words.
