Abstract
This paper introduces the goal, the character selection principles and its procedure, and the reflections on editing the Dictionary of 800 Essential Chinese Characters. In addition, some suggestions are made, i.e. textbooks for Chinese as a second language should set a clear and precise orientation; extensive and in-depth investigations should be conducted; and some conceptions have to be updated, which include an international perspective, the development of images, and the awareness of serving the users and the target community, etc.
