The Sentential Standardization of “you xialie qingxing (xingwei) zhiyi de” in Legal Documents (Article written in Chinese)

ZOU Yuhua

Abstract

Using valency theory, this paper explores the Chinese de construction in the sentence pattern you xialie qingxing (xingwei) zhiyi de (that which regards one of the following cases/acts) which is frequently found in legal documents. The results show that de should be retained in a general statement, and dropped in a specific statement. The retention or the omission of de deserves due attention from legal documents writers. In addition, the origin and evolution of the pattern are also discussed.

Keywords: valency grammar; that which regards one of the following cases (acts); sentence pattern; standardization
