Abstract
Using valency theory, this paper explores the Chinese de construction in the sentence pattern you xialie qingxing (xingwei) zhiyi de (that which regards one of the following cases/acts) which is frequently found in legal documents. The results show that de should be retained in a general statement, and dropped in a specific statement. The retention or the omission of de deserves due attention from legal documents writers. In addition, the origin and evolution of the pattern are also discussed.
