Optimizing the Compilation of TCFL Textbooks (Article written in Chinese)

LI Quan & JIN Yunzhen

Abstract

The author holds that the key to textbooks is that their contents should conform to the standard, and the arrangement of the contents should be justified. In theory and in practice, in textbook compilation for TCFL, what is essential to the justification of textbooks is that appropriate treatment of accuracy and vagueness, of systematicity and brevity, and of standardization and flexibility. Several important approaches to optimizing textbook compilation are presented. These approaches stress the nature and characteristics of the subject, characteristics of Chinese characters and Chinese language and difficulties in Chinese instruction. At the same time, the content has to be justified on its own, which should be systematic and standard. The presentation of contents should be in line with the inherent nature of Chinese language, the learning and teaching of Chinese. The balance should be stricken among various contents; new theories and new achievements on linguistic teaching should be introduced.

Keywords: Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL); principles in textbook compilation; justification
