Jessie Y. Y. WONG, YEE Sze-Onn, & Rod GERBER

Abstract

Before the advancement of technology and multimedia in education, photographs have often been used to study the physical and cultural aspects of unfamiliar places. With the current use of multimedia in education, digitized photographs play an important role. In both cases, learning occurs via the process of conceptualization of these photographs. It is important for educators to understand how students conceptualize and learn from these photographs. This study analyses the interpretations of 1 9 students in Singapore of a set of 18 photographs. Out of the 18 photographs, 6 were taken in Singapore, 6 in Hong Kong and the other 6 in Australia. The results revealed considerable variations in their understanding of these environments and their conc eptions of environments shown in these photographs.
