The Enhancement of Students’ Self-esteem by Educators (Article written in Chinese)

Abstract

Self-esteem has an intense relationship with individual’s learning and whole person development. Schools and families are two important socialization organizations in the society, which transmit ideas, cultures, ideologies and values in enhancing whole person development. “Significant others” in schools and families, such as teachers and parents, can greatly affect students’ self-esteem and their personal and social development.

This essay is an introductory discussion on enhancing student’s self-esteem from the perspectives of educational psychology and counselling psychology. “Students” here refers to those studying in secondary or primary schools. This essay begins with a brief introduction on the definition of, factors affecting and characteristics of self-concept and self-esteem. Discussions will then be made on how educators can enhance students’ self-esteem.
