Abstract

Background: Most students lose interest while learning the formal mathematics knowledge in geometry. In Macao, most teachers teach geometry based on the traditional teaching method and there is not much research on studying the academic achievement and motivation on using CAI. Therefore, the result of this research may serve local teachers in planning their geometry teaching.

Aims: This study aims to explore the effect of students’ achievement and learning motivation on using CAI in learning the concept of “Circle” in lower secondary form.

Sample: Two classes of form 3 are randomly selected from the form and one of the classes is acted as the experimental group and the other one is the control group. Each class have 52 students, total 104 students.

Method: The research adopts quasi experimental design method. CAI is adopted in the experimental group while the traditional teaching method is adopted for the control group. Both groups are offered four periods of plane geometry per week with the same contents. Pre and posttest are offered concerning their understanding of the subject materials and their learning motivations.

Results: The results are among students from different previous academic achievement, significant difference between pre-test and post-test results is found on the experimental group and among students from different previous academic achievements, significant differences between pre-test and post-test results are found on both the experimental and the control group; and regarding in learning motivation, the average score for experimental group is lower than control group but the increment is much higher in experimental group.

Conclusion: Teachers can use CAI software such as PG_lab to stimulate students’ thinking; also, teachers can use traditional mode of teaching with CAI to arouse the interest of students in learning geometry.

Keywords: computer assisted instruction; learning motivations; academic achievements
