C.K.W. SHEK, R.K. JOHNSON and E.H.F. LAW

Abstract

This paper reports a survey conducted in mid-1989 to investigate the language policy being implemented in Hong Kong secondary schools. The first part of the paper consists of an account of the language policy advocated by the government and the language practice in schools since the 60's. The second part describes the findings of this study, which demonstrate that there is minimal acceptance of Chinese as a medium of instruction and increasing acceptance of and reliance on mixed code teaching in spoken and written instruction.
