Abstract

In this paper, we present a survey on the pattern of language use in the part-time degree programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The survey reveals that since the English language requirements for study in this programme are not demanding, students with lower standard of English can still cope with their study. Therefore they do not see any immediate need to improve their English proficiency. The implications of this phenomenon on future university language policies are also discussed.
