Improving Oral English in the Hong Kong Context: A Camp Approach

H.W. Joseph HUNG and Mary Matthew SENF

Abstract

This paper describes the various aspects of a week-long pilot 'immersion programme', which involved seventy-two Form 4 pupils from three Anglo- Chinese schools in Shatin. This immersion programme is of particular interest to ESL/EFL educators and teachers because it was designed (i) to provide the diffident, reluctant-to-speak and inputcum-interaction-stricken secondary pupils with an 'English speaking environment', in which various types of communicative interaction or authentic language situations are available, and (ii) to provide an experimental setting for exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of using English summer camps as a means to oral English enhancement in the Hong Kong context. The initial results are positive and encouraging.
