Xinhua ZHU & May Sau-Mei LAI

Abstract

The subject “Putonghua” had been included in the Hong Kong secondary school curriculum as a core subject for a decade. In order to understand the assessment of Putonghua in junior high schools, we selected five secondary schools, including schools that use Putonghua to teach the Chinese language and schools that use Cantonese to teach the Chinese language, and sampled 10 copies of Putonghua test papers from these schools. The study analysed the content and approach of the assessment, recognized areas for improvement and made recommendations for the improvement of assessment of Putonghua in junior high schools, in accordance with the Putonghua curriculum.
