ECP 3110 Principles of Curriculum and Instruction Design for Early Childhood Education
This course aims at introducing the key concepts and techniques of curriculum development in early childhood education which involves designing, implementing and evaluating a curriculum. Key approaches in early childhood education such as developmentally appropriate curriculum, integrated approach, project approach, multiple intelligences approach and whole language approach to curriculum and instruction will also be discussed. It is hoped that participants will be able to apply the theories and skills in designing preschool curricula and classroom instruction.
ECP 3210 Foundations of Education
This course aims to help participants analyse factors affecting learning and teaching in early childhood education and the broader connections between schooling and society. Dimensions such as historical, philosophical, psychological, sociological and economic will be introduced. Issues in Hong Kong education will be examined in relation to these dimensions.
ECP 3310 Psychological Development of the Young Children
In this course, you are invited to deepen your understanding on the psychological development of young children from an integrative perspective of theories, research and practice. As a prologue, the context and the motivational foundation of early development will be highlighted. We shall then focus on examining different domains of early development including the cognitive, affective, social, moral and aesthetic ones. Examples of early childhood studies will be illustrated with reference to special topics such as curiosity and exploration, delay of gratification, language acquisition and thinking, attachment relationships and psychological security, drawing and narration. Current issues of major concern (e.g. talent development and special needs in the early years) will also be discussed.
ECP 3410 Human Anatomy, Growth and Health Care
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be competent early childhood teachers and health planners. It will introduce the basic human anatomy including the structure and function of the musculo-skeletal systems, nerve system, the cardiovascular system, and the respiratory system. Practical knowledge on children growth and motor development will be focused. Methods of growth assessment, nutritional requirements of childhood, and the common concerns on children’s diseases such as obesity, cacotrophia, anaemia, myopia and amblyopia will also be discussed. In order to enable students to understand and monitor the normal growth of children, various issues on pediatrics healthcare and professional support from the health services organization will be highlighted.
