On Empowering Clients to be Responsible Persons: Reflections on my Counselling Approach

YUEN Man-tak

Abstract

The author contends that helping the client to be a responsible person is the ultimate goal of counselling. The client is engaged in a therapeutic process of exploration, understanding and action. The counsellor provides a facilitative relationship and guides the client's therapeutic process. The counsellor's personal qualities determine the levels of therapeutic conditions in the counselling relationship. At the end of the paper, the author presents six principles which the counsellor can use to guide the client in the therapeutic process.
