The Emerges of Paradigms in the Theories of Mass Communication

Tung-tai LIN

Abstract
Similiar to other social sciences disciplines, the theories of mass communication have origins in the paradigms such as structural functionalism, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, and critical school. The major purpose of the paper is to integrate the mass communication theories with the above paradigms to lead the communication students to the tracks of the process of theoretical development. According to such meta-analysis, most mass communication theories base on the functional approach while recently shifting to the critical schools.
Keywords: mass communication; social sciences discipline
