The Aims of Science Teaching in Relation to Hong Kong's Needs

D.S. PAYNE

Abstract

The question of the reality of attempting to take the needs of any community into account when discussing educational aims is discussed. The case for broad integrated 'science for all' is put. For 'the able' and 'the less able' science in schools may lead to a role in society with a scientific element and for these pupils, whilst the syllabuses must reflect this to some extent, the aims must remain educational, not vocational. Technical training is a separate element to be taken up in parallel, not necessarily sequentially. Finally some problems are enunciated for discussion.
