Abstract
It is not uncommon to confuse the role of education in society - how individuals acquire and utilize knowledge - with the functioning of a formal schooling system established by that society. This is like confusing the role of politics in society - the acquisition and exercise of power in relationships - with the formal system of government. The two are interconnected but not identical. This paper examines briefly how research, both pure and applied, operates in both spheres of education.
