Programme Requirements

Advancement to candidature is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of 21 credit-units of coursework in Educational Studies and Research Methods. Doctor of Education candidates should, under the supervision of their supervisors, submit a thesis proposal, complete the thesis and pass an oral defence within a prescribed period of time for graduation. In addition, students admitted in 2011-12 and before are required to meet the requirement of IT Proficiency prescribed by the University.


Applicable to students admitted in 2017-18 and thereafter:

(1) Course Requirements

    (a) Students are required complete a minimum of 21 units of coursework before the granting

         of Doctor of Education candidature.

(i)   Required Courses 9 units
(ii)  Research-related courses* 6 units
(iii) Elective Courses 6 units

*There are pre-requisites for PEDU 6404, 6405, 7301 & 7302, please refer to Faculty Handbook ˇV Course Descriptions for details.

Total:     21 units

  

    (b) PEDU 8000: students are required to take PEDU 8000 every term from the time of admission, 

        throughout the preparation of thesis, until its completion.

(2) Qualifying Examination

Advancement to Doctor of Education candidature is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of the 21 units of coursework. No further qualifying examination is required.


(3) Research Ethics Training (RET)

Students are required to complete an online Research Ethics Training (RET) module on ˇ§Publication Ethicsˇ¨ offered by the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) and obtain a valid Publication Ethics Certificate for graduation. Applicable to students admitted in 2016-17 and before:

(1) Course Requirements

    (a) Students are required complete a minimum of 21 units of coursework before the granting

         of Doctor of Education candidature.

(i)   Required Courses 9 units
(ii)  Research-related courses* 6 units
(iii) Elective Courses 6 units

Total:     21 units

  

    (b) PEDU 8000: students are required to take PEDU 8000 every term from the time of admission, 

        throughout the preparation of thesis, until its completion.

(2) Qualifying Examination

Advancement to Doctor of Education candidature is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of the 21 units of coursework. No further qualifying examination is required.

Other requirements

(a)  Students must fulfil the Term Assessment Requirement of the Graduate School. A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receive a failure grade in the course PEDU 8000 will be put on academic probation. A student who is put on academic probation for two consecutive terms of attendance will be required to discontinue studies. (b)  A student must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.
(c)  Attending PhD Programme Annual Seminars / Doctoral Thesis Proposal Presentations (Applicable to students admitted in 2015-16 and thereafter)
Full-time students are required to attend not less than 15 sessions of PhD Programme annual seminar / doctoral thesis proposal presentation during normative study period.
Part-time students are required to attend 4 sessions of PhD Programme annual seminar / doctoral thesis proposal presentation each academic year after advancement to candidature.
(d)  Normally within a year after advancement to Doctor of Education candidature, the candidate has to register forthe course PEDU 8010 (9 units), and to submit and present the thesis proposal in an open presentation. After the thesis proposal has been approved, the candidate should, under the supervision of her/his supervisor, submit a thesis and pass the oral examination within a prescribed period of time for graduation.
(e)  Complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) course "Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research." This will be an online module and relevant informationcan be accessed from the website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/prodev/ipl.html.
(f)  IT Proficiency Test prescribed by the University (Applicable to students admitted in 2011-12 and before) ;

 

Class Schedule

There are two terms in one academic year. Term 1 is from September to December, while Term 2 is from January to April. Classes are usually offered in the evenings of Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings.
