Programme Requirements

The programme covers a range of knowledge related to Putonghua and the dialects, new language subjects, theories and practices of language education. Students are required to complete a total of 24 units for graduation, including 15 units from the Core Elective Modules and another 9 units from the Elective Modules. In addition, all students admitted in 2011-12 and before are required to meet the requirement of IT proficiency prescribed by the University.

  • MPTE 6003 Theories and Methods of Language Teaching
  • MPTE 6004 Theories and Methods of Using Putonghua as a Medium of Instruction
  • MPTE 6005 Teaching Chinese Character Acquisition and Hanyu Pinyin
  • MPTE 6107 Independent Studies
  • MPTE 6109 Language Testing Theories and Applications
  • MPTE 6110 Oral Expression and Oral Teaching
  • Elective modules from the Master of Education Degree Programme offered by the Faculty of Education :
  • MTCI 6101 Studies in Chinese Lexicology Teaching
    MTCI 6104 Socialinguistics and Chinese Language Education

    Study Scheme

    1) Students are required to complete a total of 24 units for graduation.

    (i) Core Elective Modules 15 units
    (ii) Elective Modules 9 units

    2) Other Requirements

    (a) Pass the IT Proficiency Test;

    (b) A student must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.
    (c)
    Students must fulfill the Term Assessment Requirement of the Graduate School. A student who obtains a cumulative GPA below 2.0 in the preceding term will be put on academic probation. For details, please refer to Clause 13.0 "Unsatisfactory Performance and Discontinuation of Studies" of the General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies which can be accessed from the Graduate School Homepage (http://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk).

    3) Remarks

    Exemptions of up to a total of 3 units may be granted to recipients of the Certificate / Professional Diploma in Chinese Language Teaching (Putonghua as a Medium of Instruction); and 6 units to recipients of Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Putonghua Education) issued by The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A total of 9 units may be granted to the holders of a Master¡¦s Degree issued by The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and 6 units to holders of a Master¡¦s Degree in related disciplines issued by a recognized university. Exemption and number of units to be exempted will be considered on a case-by-case basis.


    Class Schedule

    There are three terms in one academic year. Term 1 is from July to August (classes are usually offered on weekday mornings and afternoons). Term 2 is from October to February, while Term 3 is from March to June (Classes are usually offered on weekday evenings during Term 2 and Term 3).
