Teaching reading has often been practised as a kind of reading comprehension exercise in Hong Kong. In a reading lesson students are usually asked to read a passage on their own and then to do the comprehension questions set on the passage. Then the teacher checks answers to the questions with students. However, how can teachers teach reading in interesting ways that will motivate students to enjoy reading and to pick up reading even outside of the classroom? How can teachers teach students to use different reading strategies to approach different kinds and genres of texts? In this seminar, internationally renowned language and literacy educator and experienced reading teacher educator, Dr. Gertrude Tinker Sachs, will introduce to Hong Kong teachers some useful and easy-to-follow ways of teaching reading in Hong Kong primary and junior secondary classrooms. Topics and strategies covered will include: How to use Big Book Shared Reading in your lessons? How to motivate students to read with enjoyment? How to teach students to use different reading strategies? How to design follow-up speaking and writing activities based on reading texts? How to motivate students to read outside of the classroom?
