Barley Mak has been training primary and secondary English language teachers at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels in Hong Kong and New Zealand since 1990. She has served on many HKSAR teacher education committees (e.g., the ACTEQ Task Force on Language Benchmark Training Arrangement (English) and various committees for the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence.) She has conducted various public-funded research projects (e.g. Quality Education Fund and the Hong Kong Education City.) on language and teacher education related areas, focusing on developing professional development support to and enhancing the knowledge sharing community networking of English language teachers. Dr Mak is the founding Director of the Writing for Integrated Teacher Education Project (WrITE) - the first Asian site of the National Writing Project (NWP) administered out of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California , Berkeley . The NWP in the United States is a network of 175 university-affiliated sites across the United States with select international partnerships. The WrITE Project aims at improving the teaching and learning of English at the school level in Hong Kong through the teaching of writing. It has thus far attracted more than HK$2.5 million of research grant. Dr Mak is currently collaborating with academics in the USA on projects related to the assessment for writing.
