CALL FOR PROPOSALS
THEME: Compulsory Education and Beyond
The main theme focuses on
- improving on compulsory education (or universal/basic education,
etc. as it may be termed in other contexts), and
- developing beyond compulsory education, e.g. at pre-primary and
post-lower secondary levels.
Subthemes
The subthemes are perspectives from which the conference theme is to be
addressed. They are NOT independent themes.
- Policy and Resource Allocation
- Curriculum and Teaching
- Teacher Preparation and Development
- School Improvement and School Leadership
- Compulsory Education in Asian Contexts
- Developments at Pre- and Post-compulsory stages (e.g. early
childhood, upper secondary)
- Support Services (e.g. special needs provision, extra-curricular
activities)
Proposal Submissions
- Proposals are invited for (a) papers
(b) posters (c) symposia
(d) workshops.
- Papers must be original work. Please note that proposals which do
not address the main theme or one of its sub-themes will NOT be
considered.
- Languages for presentation: Chinese or English
- Procedures for submission: Submit (1) Proposal Form,
(2) a printed copy of the abstract on a separate sheet, and (3) a disk
with the abstract saved as a text file, to

- Deadline for Proposals: August 30, 1997. Submission of
proposals will be acknowledged.
- Notification of acceptance/non-acceptance: September 30, 1997.
- Deadline for Full Papers (for paper presentation):
OCTOBER 15, 1997
- Registration Fees: Presenters whose proposals are accepted will be
invited toregister for the conference. Non-HKERA members: $250 (US$35).
HKERA members (1997/98): Free. (Please do not send
registration fee at this stage.)
Guidelines on presentations
Paper
- A paper should be a report of a finished or near-finished research
study, which should include the theoretical framework, methodology,
analysis and interpretation of results, and conclusion. The proposals
should be 600-900 words in length.
- If the application is accepted, 3 copies of the entire paper should
be submitted.
- Duration: 30 minutes, including discussion
Poster
- A poster session combines the graphic display of research findings
and the main features of this study ( Background, Sample, Method,
Procedure and Conclusion).
- The proposal should be 300-500 words in length.
- A poster presenter will be assigned a poster board (approximately
4ft x 6ft) for display of materials that should be visible from
approximately 3-5 feet. Presenters should be prepared to discuss with
participants throughout the poster session.
Symposium
- A symposium is an in-depth discussion of a theme by a panel of
speakers. The convener of the panel is responsible for the organization
and conduct of the symposium.
- Proposals should be 300-500 words in length. Please specify in the
Proposal Form whether you need 1 hour or 2 hours.
Workshop
- Workshops are intended to provide opportunities for participants to
acquire knowledge or skills in education in order to promote further
research in Hong Kong.
- A workshop will be conducted by a tutor who will design the content
and determine the amount of tuition time required (1 hour).
- Proposals should be 300-500 words in length.
