Teaching Practice

(Mathematics and Mathematics Education) Programme (BMED) and B.Ed. (Liberal Studies) Programme (LSED) , which provides opportunities for students to put theory into classroom practice. During the TP period, the Faculty’s TP supervisors will visit students in their practicum schools and support their professional development through formative and summative assessment, taking into consideration their teaching performance, as well as their professional behaviour and attitude.

The intended Learning Outcomes of TP are that students will:
(1) demonstrate a competence in the core teaching skills;
(2) integrate and apply pedagogical content knowledge in practices;
(3) apply concepts of reflective practice to real classroom situations; and
(4) develop appropriate attitudes and values of a qualified teacher.

Teaching Practice Activities

Activities related to Teaching Practice, Pre-Teaching Practice Experience and Teacher Professional Development

School Visit
School Visit is the first step for undergraduate student teachers to experience the school life. Through visiting different schools, all teachers-to-be begin participating in school activities, understanding the roles of teachers, and observing classroom teaching and curriculum design of their major subjects.
School Attachment
As one of the important prerequisite activities of Teaching Practice (TP) of undergraduate programmes, the School Attachment held in local schools allows the students to observe and participate in various school activities from a teacher’s perspective, gain school experience and learn from experienced teachers.
School Experience
School Experience is also one of the prerequisite activities of TP of all undergraduate programmes. Students will participate in a three-day School Experience to experience the school life, improve teaching skills, and develop professional attitudes.
Sharing on TP and Pre-TP Experience Activities
Sharing on TP and Pre-TP Experience Activities aim to better prepare students for their TP, School Attachment, School Experience and School Visits. Students will be provided with a variety of useful information in the briefing, such as advice on the preparation of preliminary school visits, lesson planning and development of professional attitudes and manner. Upon completion of the above activities, students will also have an opportunity to evaluate and reflect upon their performance in TP and various Pre-TP Experience Activities.
Professional and Career talks
Different professional talks will be held every year in order to enhance students’ understanding of today’s education trends, teaching, teacher professional development and career planning, so as to better prepare students for their future teaching career development.
Teaching Enhancement Workshops
To increase students’ awareness of the relationship between language and classroom, as well as enhancing students’ various teaching skills,  different Teaching Enhancement Workshops are held throughout the academic year.   Students will be introduced an array ofteaching strategies, such as chalkboard writing skills, using English as a medium of instruction, storytelling techniques, voice projection tips, and more during the workshops.
Teaching Adviser Scheme Annual Gathering
The support of participating schools and Teaching Advisers plays a crucial role in students’ successful completion of TP. In order to express the Faculty’s gratitude and promote the professional development of teachers, the Teaching Practice Office will organize the “Teaching Adviser Scheme Annual Gathering” (the Gathering) every year. All principals, Teaching Advisers and school representatives of participating schools are invited to the Gathering to share their experience on different education issues.

Heartfelt Thanks to Teaching Advisers

Teaching Adviser Scheme

In addition to providing students with various kinds of support and guidance during the Teaching Practice (TP) period, as well as strengthening the connection with all front-line educators in both primary and secondary schools, the Faculty has introduced a “Teaching Adviser Scheme".

Teaching Advisers (TAs) are experienced local school teachers. The appointment of TAs is usually nominated by participating schools or the Faculty’s teaching staff and then appointed by the Faculty.

With TAs’ support and guidance, students will be able to:

  • adapt to the school environment more quickly;
  • gain experience through observing TA’s lessons;
  • reflect upon their teaching performance and the whole TP process under TAs’ guidance.

To ensure that all the appointed teachers understand the roles of TA, the Faculty will arrange a “Teaching Adviser Scheme Briefing" for all TAs before each TP period. Besides introducing the roles and responsibilities of TAs, the briefing also allows all appointed teachers to exchange information and share ideas with regard to the Scheme.
