PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OF TEACHER EDUCATORS THROUGH THE TEACHING PRACTICUM

Ora W.Y. KWO

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the professional development of teacher educators. It addresses the literature on educating teachers for change, and considers self-renewal as a critical challenge to teacher educators. It then turns to a three-year project which involves collaborative work of faculty members at the University of Hong Kong. The project aims to enhance the quality of learning in the teaching practicum. To generate a new culture among teacher educators, the planning of the project has been based on an identification of constraints and possibilities. The paper reports on the ongoing professional discourse among the project participants through lunchtime workshops and the electronic mail system. As this is an ongoing project concerning professional development, the paper cannot yet reach a firm conclusion on its outcomes. However, it can raise issues and chart directions for self-renewal of teacher educators through collaboration.
