Relationships Between Word Recognition, Reading Comprehension and Writing Performance of Grade Six Students in Hong Kong (Article written in chinese)

LAW Yin-Kum

Abstract

Research shows that there is positive relationship between reading abilities and writing abilities. It also reveals that abilities in word recognition and background knowledge construction are important factors contributing to the relationship. The aims of this research are : (1) To investigate the relationship between word recognition, reading comprehension and written performance; (2) To examine the relationship between reading comprehension and writing composition under the condition that the students perform different tasks after reading the same passages. 287 grade six primary students have received some tests. Results indicate that individual differences are correlated to their performance in word recognition, reading comprehension and writing composition. However, there are different correlations in different language ability groups. The students do not perform better in writing composition though they have read the passages with similar themes before. Suggestions on the teaching of reading and writing are recommended as well.
