Setting Standards for Teachers of English in Hong Kong - The Teachers' Perspective

Abstract

This paper describes the very large response to the survey instrument that was used to ascertain the views of teachers of English on the issue of setting language benchmarks for teachers of English in Hong Kong. It then discusses the results o f the survey, points out the salient trends which emerged, and discusses the implications of the teachers' responses to the establishment and implementation of the high-stakes assessment which forms part of the Hong Kong SAR Government's benchmark policy, a policy designed to upgrade teaching and teacher professionalism.
