THE USE OF TV IN CONTINUING EDUCATION IN TAIWAN

WEN Chun-fu

Abstract
Education is a lifelong effort. The use of TV in continuing education is now proving to be effective and popular because it is not necessary for people to leave their places of work. In Taiwan, it has been undergoing extensive development since 1977. But to build the off-campus TV programs to date costs much, so in Taiwan government grants play an important factor in the development of the programs. Until now, there are only two junior colleges and three universities involved in such programs. Due to the fact that there are some of difficulties of earlier efforts to be overcome, the humanities and social sciences are mainly emphasized, but to update and expand the competencies of engineers, the continuing education programs should also be aimed at engineer- ing courses. Potential advantages and disadvantages of the UHF network system in continuing education in Taiwan are widely discussed in existing programs. Overall though, the use of TV in continuing education in Taiwan is still in its infancy.
