SAFEGUARDING DATABASES BASIC CONCEPTS REVISITED

Richard Cardinali

Abstract
The thrust of MIS operations is to keep an information system running smoothly and to insure services are delivered in an uninterrupted, reliable and secure fashion. This poses a special challenge in today's environment of computer misuses.

The focus of this paper is on four main areas normally addressed when protecting a company's most vital asset-its database. These areas are: 1. Information system vulnerability: 2.Computer crime; 3.Employee access; 4. Personnel policies.

The author examines research pertaining to safeguarding data, software and hardware from deliberate computer based information security breaches.

Computers and the data stored within are under attack from intentional and unintentional human error. Computer crime and vandalism is running rampant It is a vastly under-reported crime because the victims, both large and small businesses, are unwilling and/or embarrassed to admit that their computer systems have been breached.

The reader will also gain an increased awareness of the absolute necessity for safeguarding one of the most vital assets of a business, its computer based data. Perhaps it will cause data processing and systems managers to go examine safeguards such as user access passwords, implementation of an audit of our processing system, or update our virus detection program.

Keywords: Computer crime, Data security
