The Impact of Open Book Examinations on Student Learning

LOI Soh-Loi & Jack Cheng-Chuah TEO

Abstract

This paper aims to study the impact of open book examinations on the learning habits of students in the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. A survey was conducted in order to ascertain whether students preferred open book examinatio n and the reasons for their preference. The results of the survey showed that almost two-thirds of the students preferred open book examinations despite being more familiar with closed book examinations. They felt that preparations for open book examinati ons were less time-consuming and that they required less memorization and left more room for logical thinking. This article examines how open book examinations can be used to change students' learning attitudes and make the learning process more active.
