Curriculum Design, Implementation and Evaluation

K.C. PANG

Abstract

The purpose of this talk is to share with the audience some views about curriculum design and implementation, as well as ways of evaluating students' achievement. The concept of curriculum is first discussed, with reference to a model showing the relationships among four basic elements. Attention is then drawn to systematic curriculum design based on the model, as well as to other necessary considerations. Curriculum implementation is discussed in terms of factors affecting successful implementation, and a "level of use" framework is introduced for assessing the effectiveness of implementation. Finally, both formative and summative evaluations are recommended for assessing students' achievement. In the talk, these concepts of curriculum design, implementation and evaluation will then be illustrated by reference to two current major curriculum changes in Hong Kong.
