Empowering Teachers and Students: The Whole-language Philosophy in the Classroom

Angela MOK

Abstract

This paper discusses the philosophy of the whole language approach in schools. It elaborates the theory base and applications of whole language in the classroom. It is argued in this paper that language, human development and thinking are dependent on each other in the process of learning. The most effective way of helping learners to learn is to engage them in situations of active learning. The whole language approach advocated here can create and foster an environment which supports interactive community learning for interactive learning. It is therefore a viable means to revive classroom teaching and language learning because both the teacher and learner are empowered in this approach.
