The Orff Method

LAU Chiu Kay

Abstract

The Orff Method is aimed at promoting creativity through playing musical instruments. The method successfully integrates singing, instrumental playing, movements, speech and drama in music teaching, enriching music activities, and enhancing children's interest in learning music.

Orff has been considered a great music educator. One of the reasons is that he has designed a lot of instruments which are very practical, easy to play, and elegant in tune quality, and which enable young beginners to achieve harmony and beauty without much difficulty. Orff has also systematically arranged the range of instrumental and vocal programmes which he designed to facilitate teaching and learning.

The Orff Method has been extensively used in music teaching at different levels of education: kindergartens, child-care centres, primary and secondary schools, special schools as well as speech and music therapy programmes. The Orff followers have further developed the method by integrating it with the Kodaly Method, and have as a result led the Orff Method to enjoy an even higher status in music education.
