Which Pictures Produce the Best Student Writing?

Tony M.K.Lau

Abstract

This paper reports on an action research project which aimed at studying the effect of different types of pictorial stimuli upon students' performance in picture description writing tasks. The ultimate goal of the project was to identify the type of picture that can motivate senior secondary students to write in a coherent, analytical and creative manner. The results show that concrete pictures are useful in generating descriptive writing; and abstract pictures, particularly those with an exaggerative element, are effective in stimulating creativity in thinking and writing. Evidence suggests that there is a close link between the appeal of a picture and the quality of the writing it produces. In the research, the two pictures which interested the students most were also those which produced the best written work.
